Hands Across South Dakota Launches "Mending
Fences" Program
Hands Across South Dakota a coalition originally
formed during the 2002 drought has once again
organized to help producers struck by drought
and fire. Hands Across South Dakota in
conjunction with the Game, Fish and Parks
Department has launched the "Mending Fences"
Program. Major wildfires in western South
Dakota this summer destroyed many miles of
fence. Cattle ranchers are in need of assistance
to help them repair fences or to help pay for
fencing materials. Folks who live in urban areas
often find it difficult to meet ranchers. This
would be an excellent opportunity for hunters
and ranchers to cooperate in a time of need.
Hands Across South Dakota is currently looking
for interested landowners and hunters to
participate in the program. Several hunters
have offered their time in fence repair.
Individuals wishing to make monetary
contributions may do so as well. Any landowner
interested in participating in the program and
spending a day working with a hunter "mending
fences" can call 1-888-734-8136 ext. 118.
