Young Producers Group

July 23, 2014 - July 24, 2014

South Dakota Farmers Union invites young producers and their families to join them for a weekend of inspiration, information, networking and family fun July 23-24 in Huron.

"Young Producer events are one way of providing support and valuable information to the new generation of South Dakota's agriculture producers," said Kristen Fink, SDFU Rural Development Director.

Fink explained that as the average age of agriculture producers continues to increase, South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) sees networking with their peers and industry experts as a valuable way for young producers to work through challenges and develop profitable operations that will carry them and their families into the next generation.

The event is free to Farmers Union members. "Farming and ranching is a family business, whether one spouse works somewhere else or not. So, we encourage couples to attend."

2014 Farm Bill Impact

Farm Service Agency State Executive Director, Craig Schaunaman is among the speakers presenting at the event. He will discuss the 2014 Farm bill and its impact on South Dakota farmers and ranchers. Other speakers include: Jim Woster, motivational speaker; Billie Sutton, Legislator, producer and financial consultant; DuWayne Bosse, marketing specialist; Gloria Schaefer, motivational speaker; and Dave Franssens, USDA Rural Development Area Specialist.

Child care is provided throughout the event and families receive a free pass to Splash Central Waterpark the evening of July 24.

SDFU to host Dr. Temple Grandin

August 5, 2014

South Dakota Farmers Union will host two workshops, Raising the Best: Livestock Husbandry and Handling for Today's Market with Dr. Temple Grandin, on Tuesday, July 1 in Rapid City and on Tuesday, August 5 in Watertown.

The workshops are free and open to the public. The sessions are intended to educate livestock producers about modern, science-based handling procedures and assist them with managing risk to improve their economic viability. The workshops will each feature Dr. Grandin and include a presentation from SDSU Extension livestock specialists.

SDFU has partnered with SDSU Extension on these workshops and hope that the workshops also result in establishing connections between producers and the Extension's various regional livestock specialists. The SDSU Extension panel will focus on species specific livestock husbandry practices.

The Watertown workshop will be held on Tuesday, August 5, and will take place during the 2014 Codington County 4-H Achievement Days. The program will begin with Dr. Grandin at 10:30 a.m. CDT at the Codington County Extension Complex. Following Dr. Grandin's presentation, SDSU Extension livestock specialists will lead a panel discussion on specific livestock husbandry practices and livestock handling equipment. The workshop will conclude at 12:30 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public.
