SDFU President Commends House on Health Reform

 – By

South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) President Doug Sombke released the following statement after the  U.S. House of Representatives passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) bringing health care reform to America. President Obama signed the bill into law Tuesday.

“I’m proud of the House of Representatives and those who voted to bring real health care reform to this country,” Sombke said. “Farmers Union has been working to get quality, affordable health care to rural South Dakota for years. We’re confident this law will bring more doctors and services to rural South Dakota, as well as give more affordable health care insurance to our hard working farmers and ranchers.”

“For far too long many of our state’s agricultural producers have either gone without health care insurance, or been denied or dropped from coverage because of their age, occupation, or preexisting conditions. Those factors won’t matter anymore, and that’s the way it should be.”

“This legislation will bring accessible, affordable coverage for rural Americans and with the establishment of health insurance exchanges for the self-employed and small businesses, farmers and ranchers will have the chance to finally get coverage that they can afford.”
