South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) has named Sen. Ryan Maher (D-District 28) of Isabel, and Rep. Quinten Burg (D-District 22) of Wessington Springs as the organization’s legislators of the year. The two lawmakers were presented with the awards during South Dakota Farmers Union’s annual Legislative Day at the State Capitol in Pierre January 26.
A member of the South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) Board of Directors testified before the Senate Transportation Committee Wednesday, January 27, at the State Capitol in opposition to Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), a measure which would increase the state gas tax 6 cents per gallon and increase certain vehicle licensing fees anywhere from $5 to $55 per vehicle.

The 95th annual South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) State Convention will be held February 12-13, 2010, at the Crossroads Hotel and Huron Event Center. The theme of this year’s convention is “Capturing our Renewable Future.”

It's a chance for SDFU members to witness the process their lawmakers go through during the legislative session, and it gives them an opportunity to talk with their elected representatives about the issues that are important to them.
For the third straight year, 25 South Dakota high school seniors will share $25,000 in scholarships from Farmers Union Insurance, in cooperation with the South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation. The 25 high school seniors will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. They will be given to those who plan on pursuing a post-secondary education at a college, university, or technical school in the state of South Dakota. The scholarships are funded with support from Farmers Union Insurance agents in South Dakota and the South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation. The application deadline is April 15, 2010. Application forms are available from school counselors, local Farmers Union Insurance Agents, or at www.sdfufoundation.org
Three high school seniors shared $1,500 in scholarships awarded by the South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation. The 2009 scholarship recipients include Morgan Bushfield of Hitchcock, Cole Hogg of Miranda and Blake Farber of Britton.
The South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation takes pride in announcing the availability of scholarships to applicants whose parents are members of South Dakota Farmers Union. The application deadline for 2011 has passed. But check back often for the release of the 2012 scholarship education information.
