Legislation introduced today in Congress will put a cap on farm payments individual producers are eligible for and close loopholes in the current program. The measure, introduced by Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., and Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, would set a hard cap on combined farm payments of $250,000 for a married couple.
Farmers Union members from across the country have given over $55,000 to Feeding America, a nonprofit hunger relief organization, $50,000 of which will be matched by farmer and philanthropist Howard G. Buffett. South Dakota and its Farmers Union members contributed over $11,200 to the effort. 138 individuals across South Dakota donated to the challenge.
Delegates to the 110th anniversary convention of the National Farmers Union being held at La Vista, Neb., have passed a special order of business calling for major changes in the national beef checkoff program. The special order originated from South Dakota Farmers Union which passed a similar measure last month at its state convention.
National Farmers Union delegates voted unanimously today to re-elect President Roger Johnson and Vice President Claudia Svarstad to their respective offices during the organization’s 110th Anniversary Convention at La Vista, Neb., a suburb of Omaha. Elections for president and vice president are held every two years.
