Farmers Union Members Meet with South Dakota Congressional Delegation

South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) members met with the state's congressional delegation today in Washington, D.C., during the annual National Farmers Union Fly-In. The meetings were held Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the U.S. Capitol. Rep. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.), Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) and Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) discussed many of the key issues facing agriculture in South Dakota and across the country in the tight budget situation the federal government is facing.

Farmers Union Group in Washington on September 11, 2001 Will Return to the Nation's Capital for 10th Anniversary

A group of South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) members were in Washington, D.C., on September 11, 2001 to meet with congressional leaders about the future of agriculture. Farmers Union members from across the country attend the annual National Farmers Union “Fly-In” to Washington each fall in early September to talk with lawmakers. But the meetings they attended during the 2001 Fly-In aren’t what will stick in their mind forever. SDFU Secretary/Treasurer Karla Hofhenke of Huron was part of a 25 member South Dakota Farmers Union delegation that was in Washington that fateful day.

Five Outstanding South Dakotans Receive Rural Dakota Pride Award

Five outstanding South Dakotans were honored Saturday, Sept. 3, with the 2011 Rural Dakota Pride Awards from the South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) Foundation. A ceremony was held on the Freedom Stage during Farmers Union Day at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. The Rural Dakota Pride Award program was established through the SDFU Foundation four years ago with the awards designed to recognize individuals who have made a difference through volunteer efforts in their local communities.

Experts Discuss Upcoming Farm Bill at State Fair Forum

The upcoming Farm Bill debate will be one of the most difficult in recent memory. That’s according to a panel of experts assembled today at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. A panel of six agriculture and conservation experts took part in a Farm Bill Forum today, sponsored by South Dakota Farmers Union, to discuss the upcoming legislation that will be debated in Congress that affects the agriculture industry. The Farm Bill is a piece of legislation passed by Congress every five years that funds nutrition and agriculture programs across the country.
