SDFU Youth Visit Pierre for Two-Year Achievement Award Trip
January 30, 2012
Farmers Union youth stand on the Capitol steps in Pierre during their three-day trip to the Capital City to learn more about their state government. South Dakota young people from across the state returned home from Pierre this week with a better understanding of their government. The group visited the Capital City as participants in the South Dakota Farmers Union's Senior Youth Legislative Award Trip.
“These are young people who have completed two years of senior youth studies,” explained SDFU Education Director Bonnie Geyer. “The purpose of the award trip is to give young people a more intensive look at state government and especially the state Legislature than they would likely receive in a one-day high school trip to the Capitol.”
The rural young people were able to join other Farmers Union members in the annual Farmers Union Legislative Day activities as well as attend committee hearings, observe floor action in both the House and Senate and meet with lobbyists, pages and interns. The group also visited the National Guard Museum, the World War II, Vietnam and Fighting Stallions Memorials, the Pierre Aquatic Center and the Discovery Center.
